But I am nothing if not supportive of my childrens right to choose, so I bought him a Nerd Pride shirt at the Coop, went to the MIT Admissions Road Show featuring Bryan Nance when it rolled through town during the summer and, as promised, celebrated his admission in December by running around the yard waving sparklers (thankfully, this hasnt found its way to YouTube). I was impressed by the effort made by the MIT admissions staff: the personal notes, the long awaited tube, and the holiday cards. But some part of me remained unconvinced; was this cold, stark, urban enclave of technocrats REALLY the right place? Well CPW quieted all my doubts. MIT is amazing. Let me count the ways: At MIT students change the world Everywhere we went during CPW, we were regaled with incredible stories: Donald Sadoways students working on a new process to make steel with oxygen as a bi-product instead of carbon dioxide; Amy Smiths students creating charcoal out of waste material to prevent deforestation in the third world; UROP presentations from students who had worked at CERN (yeah, that place in Geneva with the particle accelerator that might create a black hole); CSAIL presentations on developing new microprocessors and robots; Dean Vandivers presentation on the MIT vehicle summit which resulted in student designed and built passenger vehicles with ridiculous fuel efficiency (did he really say 200 miles per gallon?) and so many more. It quite literally boggles the mind. At MIT the faculty and staff sincerely care about the undergraduates It isnt what you would expect at a premier research facility. Surely there are anti-social, nose to the grindstone researchers tucked away somewhere?? Well, if there are, they were well hidden at CPW. President Hockfield herself assured me that all the Nobel laureates actually teach, hold office hours and involve students in their projects. And everyone was so NICE President Hockfield, Stu Schmill, Daniel Barkowitz, (who handed out a 100 Grand to every parent who registered for a Financial Aid session okay, it was the candy bar variety, but it is the thought that counts!) of course the crowd in Admissions, and every professor, administrator, and dean we met. And the Housemasters. Like in Harry Potter! Full professors who live in dorms with their spouses, and their children and even their dogs and actually keep an eye on the students. They had open houses on Saturday and fed the parents brunch. Plus there are Graduate Assistants who live on every hall. Anyone who, like me, has had t o drop a child at a large state university in a high rise dorm presided over only by an undergraduate R.A. a year older than her charges, would certainly be reassured by the quality of the safety net at MIT. At MIT the students are multi-talented and fun loving Admittedly, they are not normal But they are still fun. I mean, Snively really does wear a binary watch, but he was still charming. The Logarhythms dressed a member in balloons but their concert appearances were still amazing, as were all six a cappella groups who sang, and the mariachi band, and the salsa dancers and the Steel Orchestra MIT students all. The parents were excluded from the really fun stuff. I thought it would cramp Donalds style if I showed up for the bouncy ball drop at Senior House, or the human hamster wheel at East, or the liquid nitrogen ice cream at Random, and he expressly forbade my going on the unofficial tour named after a certain citrus fruit I did snag a hot dog at Theta Delt (thank you for your kindness to a starving parent) and some regular ice cream at the Meet the Bloggers party and got a feel for the warmth and camaraderie that permeated every corner of campus during CPW. After all, no one could do it all. The schedule of events was 87 pages lon g! The aesthetics of MIT do grow on you Stata included. It does look like something out of a Dr. Seuss book, but it is bright and open, and airy and, if you try you can convince yourself it is whimsical rather than weird. I did look up too long while sitting in 32-449, and it made me dizzy as my brain tried to make the panels straight. If you leave the corridors and tunnels and walk outdoors along the Charles River, the view is quite lovely. And when the weather turns to *#% as it did without warning on several occasions (the Weather Machine must have shorted out) then there is something to be said for being able to get from Mass Ave to Kendall Square while still indoors. I got caught out twice and bought not one, but two MIT umbrellas at two different Coops. I also bought decals for my cars window and a MIT Mom sweatshirt. Yep, Im ready. MIT is amazing.

Biography of Fred Hoyle, British Astronomer

The science of astronomy features many colorful characters throughout its history, and Sir Fred Hoyle FRS was among them. He is best known for coining the term Big Bang for the event that birthed the universe. Ironically, he was not a big supporter of the theory of the Big Bang and spent much of his career formulating the theory of stellar nucleosynthesis—the process by which elements heavier than hydrogen and helium are created inside stars. The Early Years Fred Hoyle was born on the 24th of June, 1915 to Ben and Mable Pickard Hoyle. Both his parents were musically inclined and worked various jobs during their lives. They lived in the small town of West Riding, in Yorkshire, England. Young Fred attended school at Bingley Grammar School and eventually moved on to Emmanual College at Cambridge, where he studied mathematics. He married Barbara Clark in 1939, and they had two children. With the onset of war in the 1940s, Hoyle worked on various projects that benefitted the war effort. In particular, he worked on radar technology. During his work for the British Admiralty, Hoyle continued to study cosmology and made trips to the United States to meet with astronomers. Creating the Theory of Elements in Stars During one of his astronomy tours, Hoyle became acquainted with the idea of supernova explosions, which are catastrophic events that end the lives of massive stars. It is in such events that some of the heavier elements (such as plutonium and others) are created. Yet, he was also intrigued by processes inside ordinary stars  (such as the Sun) and began looking at ways to explain how such elements as carbon could be created inside those. After the war, Hoyle returned to Cambridge as a lecturer at St. Johns College to continue his work. There, he formed a research group focused specifically on stellar nucleosynthesis topics, including the formation of elements inside all types of stars. Hoyle, along with colleagues William Alfred Fowler, Margaret Burbidge, and Geoffrey Burbidge, eventually worked out the basic processes to explain how stars synthesize heavier elements in their cores (and, in the case of supernovae, how catastrophic explosions played a role in the creation  of very heavy elements). He stayed at Cambridge until the early 1970s, becoming one of the worlds foremost astronomers due to his work on stellar nucleosynthesis. Fred Hoyle and the Big Bang Theory Although Fred Hoyle is often credited with the name Big Bang, he was an active opponent of the idea that the universe had a specific beginning. That theory was proposed by astronomer Georges Lemaitre. Instead, Hoyle preferred the steady state universe, where the density of the universe is constant and matter is constantly being created. The Big Bang, by comparison, suggests that the universe began in one event some 13.8 billion years ago. At that time, all matter was created and the expansion of the universe began. The Big Bang name he used came from an interview on the BBC, where he was explaining the difference between the explosive nature of the Big Bang versus the steady state theory he favored. The Steady State theory is no longer taken seriously, but it was vigorously debated for years. Later Years and Controversies After Fred Hoyle retired from Cambridge, he turned to science popularization and writing science fiction. He served on the planning board for one of the most famous telescopes in the world, the four-meter-wide Anglo-Australian telescope in Australia. Hoyle also became a staunch opponent of the idea that life began on Earth. Instead, he suggested it came from space. This theory, called panspermia, says that the seeds of life on our planet may have been delivered by comets. In later years, Hoyle and colleague Chandra Wickramasinghe advanced the idea that flu pandemics could have been brought to Earth in this way. These ideas werent very popular and Hoyle paid the price for advancing them. In 1983, Fowler and astronomer and astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work on the stellar nucleosynthesis theories. Hoyle was left out of the prize, even though he was an important pioneer in the subject. Theres been much speculation that Hoyles treatment of colleagues and his later interest in alien life forms may have given the Nobel Committee an excuse to omit his name from the prize. Fred Hoyle spent his last years writing books, giving speeches, and hiking on the moors near his final home in Englands Lake District. After a particularly nasty fall in 1997, his health declined and he died after a series of strokes on August 20, 2001. Awards and Publications Fred Hoyle was made a fellow of the Royal Society in 1957. He won several medals and prizes over the years, including the Mayhew Prize, the Crafoord Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Royal Medal, and the Klumpke-Roberts Award. What makes film? Essay Just before the making of the film there was political and social debates serounding the popularity of drugs. With the release of this film there then were even larger debates resulting in a cultural shift of attitudes towards drugs and how they are represented. Film has a large influence over our personal cultural interpretations of certain spaces and times etc. For example I personally have never been to America. But through the representation of the back streets of neglected area in central America cities found in the film Seven i would aviod these area if i were ever to be in America. Immediatly the audience are aware of the type of culture they are going to be shown through the film being labelled as a thrillar. However i personally therefore could be labelled as nieve, because culture and the way it is represented is linked very strangly to myth. The film seven acted out to me what I would have thought these areas of America to be like, therefore satisfings my viewing needs. But that representation of those areas could be completely wrong. But the media has to play on myths to sell films, televisons shows etc to the audience. If the film would have shown those areas to be clean, frindly and safe i therefore may not have been convienced by the narrative and the film would not have impressed me, there perspective target audience. This shaped my life I never was able to trust or to give my heart out until I met my best friend Nadine. We shared a lot of memories together and we were the best of friends she was the one I would cry to and tell all my feelings to. She would always listen to me and I wouldn’t be judged because she had a love that never failed. As I recall I remember one time Nadine running to me in the middle of the night crying her eyes out he parents were murdered. I cried all night with her and washed her tears away I was afraid with her and didn’t know what to do I scared. My mom took her in as her child so not only was Nadine my best friend but she was also my sister. My mother met a man name sam he was the best man my mom could have ever found. He took me in as his own child and I loved him dearly. He was the father that I always wanted. We had many happy days together but in the mid- 1800's all this would change and my life would have another bump and dramatically changed my life forever. Qafzeh Cave Evidence for Middle Paleolithic Burials

Qafzeh Cave is an important multicomponent rock shelter with early modern human remains dated to the Middle Paleolithic period. It is located in the Yizrael valley of the Lower Galilee region of Israel, on the slope of Har Qedumim at an elevation of 250 meters (820 feet) above sea level. In addition to the important Middle Paleolithic occupations, Qafzeh has later Upper Paleolithic and Holocene occupations. The oldest levels are dated to the Mousterian Middle Paleolithic period, about 80,000-100,000 years ago (thermoluminescence dates of 92,000 /- 5,000; electron spin resonance dates 82,400-109,000 /- 10,000). In addition to human remains, the site is characterized by a series of hearths; and stone tools from the Middle Paleolithic levels are dominated by artifacts made using the radial or centripetal Levallois technique. Qafzeh cave contains some of the earliest evidence for burials in the world.   Animal and Human Remains Animals represented in the Mousterian levels are woodland-adapted red deer, fallow deer, and aurochs, as well as microvertebrates. The Upper Paleolithic levels include land snails and freshwater bivalves as food sources. Human remains from Qafzeh cave include bones and bone fragments from a minimum of 27 individuals, including eight partial skeletons. Qafzeh 9 and 10 are almost completely intact. Most of the human remains appear to have been purposefully buried: if so, these are very early examples of modern behavior indeed, with the burials direct-dated to ~92,000 years ago (BP). The remains are from anatomically modern humans, with some archaic features; they are directly associated with Levallois-Mousterian assemblage. Cranial Trauma Modern behaviors indicated at the cave include the purposeful burials; the use of ochre for body painting; the presence of marine shells, used as ornamentation and, most interestingly, the survival and eventual ritual interment of a severely brain-damaged child. The image on this page is of this individuals healed head trauma. According to Coqueugniot and colleagues analysis, Qafzeh 11, a juvenile aged between 12-13, suffered a traumatic brain injury about eight years before his or her death. The injury would likely have impacted Qafzeh 11s cognitive and social skills, and it appears as if the juvenile was given a deliberate, ceremonial burial with deer antlers as grave goods. The burial and the survival of the child reflect an elaborate social behavior for the Middle Paleolithic inhabitants of Qafzeh cave. Marine Shells at Qafzeh Cave Unlike the deer antler for Qafzeh 11, the marine shells do not seem to be associated with burials, but rather are scattered more or less randomly throughout the deposit. Species identified include ten Glycymeris insubrica  or G. nummaria. Some of the shells are stained with red, yellow, and black pigments of ochre and manganese. Each shell was perforated, with the perforations either natural and enlarged by percussion or completely created by percussion. At the time of the Mousterian occupation of the cave, the sea coast was about 45-50 kilometers (28-30 miles) away; ochre deposits are known to be located between 6-8 km (3.7-5 mi) from the cave entrance. My favorite musician, Kid Cudi, just released his newest album, A Speeding Bullet to Heaven. I hadn’t been listing to Kid Cudi to often lately although he was my idol in 2010. That was the year he dropped his debut album Man on the Moon II. This albums has been then anthem for many teens across the country for many years after its release. That’s why I think I should talk about it. This rapper who was just coming up out of Cleveland, dropped a mixtape before this album which got him some of his initial buzz he had, but he didn’t really take off till Man on the Moon II. It may have helped that his first mixtape which wasn’t super popular, was still extremely good and super underrated. One certain super star noticed that his mixtape was good. A few months after it was released Kanye West invited him to his studio to come work with him. After Kanye had just a few studio sessions with him he decided that Kid Cudi would make a good addition to his music label. After getting picked up by Kanye, Kid Cudi was on a shooting star to success, with his popularity growing more and more every single day. Being able to work with Kanye West and his team of producers Kid Cudi was able to get mass amounts of studio time. Plus having a few Kanye West features on an album no matter how good it is can make it explode with popularity. Kid Cudi was working with some of the best and most famous producers of the past decade or so, sitting there with them helping them make the beats he would be rapping over. Kid Cudi has an amazing singing voice that he works into nearly all of his raps, mostly as the chorus but it all works together to sound great. He made sure all of the beats he would be rapping over would create perfect harmony from when he’s going his hardest rapping like he’s the king of hip-hop or when he mixes it up and lets his singing voice shine. His voice works like butter on toast, his flow worked perfectly for his singing to rap transitions. The album took everyone by surprise, it came out in 2010 and was almost instantly deemed a classic in the hip-hop community. Even though nearly everyone just sees rap as a one sided story. Where they rap about their wealth or the amount of drugs they do, or maybe about the crazy amounts of girls they have â€Å"relations† with. Kid Cudi is nearly the polar opposite, don’t get me wrong he has his club bangers and less influential songs. But most of his songs he releases put out positivity, being happy with life, and not letting others get in the way of his dreams. â€Å"I guess Im cool and those happy thoughts in my head Im feeling like Im Peter Pan minus the tights and the fairies happy to see how far Ive come to the same place it began my dreams and imagination. Perfectly at peace so I move along a bit higher† One of his most po pular songs â€Å"Soundtrack to My Life† he talks about the struggles he went through as a kid and how he only could rely on his sister out of his three siblings. He also talks about how he’s never been the same after his father died, and that he â€Å"Try to think of myself as a sacrifice so that the lil’ kids aren’t the only ones who are up at night.† Kid Cudi unlike most rappers makes his music rather relatable to his listeners which is what really helped bring him to fame. But you really have to listen close and not just look at the surface, he even talks about that saying â€Å"Avoid the obvious context of the song†. He also speaks about how being famous isn’t what he was hoping it would be like, he raps about not being able to stop his blog because he would be an â€Å"A-hole† and that he hopes he can settle down one day because he’s always being put on tour. After this album was released he continued with his stat e side tour before he left for his worldwide tour. His touring went on for nearly a year or two before he finally was done with his planned tours. After settling down back in Cleveland he was confronted about someone remixing his song â€Å"Soundtrack to My Life† to be used in a movie, this movie Project X, helped him retain his fan base even when he was working on his music instead of releasing music or touring. This movie made Kid Cudi a pretty penny in return. This movie also brought in a much wider fan base for Kid Cudi, which helped him and hurt him. Not long after this movie was made he released another album, Indicud. Though it was still a good album it was different than what most people were hoping for. Mostly because after touring and once he got home he decided to take up a life of sobriety which he said cleared his mind and brought him enlightenment. This enlightenment he found changed his music, he began to make nearly all his beats and began to sing more, heâ₠¬â„¢s a good singer don’t get me wrong, but there is most certainly better singers out there. But his newly brought in fan base from the movie Project X didn’t really enjoy this album, they mostly knew him for his remixed version of â€Å"Sound Track to My Life† which is a good song but it’s made for parties or the club scene. Indicud was more of a sitting out by the pool in the sun having a grill out with friends type of music. So a lot of these people were looking for an album that they could party too, but it’s just not what they got. With his newest album Speeding Bullet to Heaven, he decided to say screw it to that fan base and made the entire album comprised of almost only his singing vocals and guitar work. When I compare Man on the Moon II to the rest of his work I would give it a solid nine out of ten. Comparing it to almost any other rap album ever though its and easy ten out of ten. This classic hip-hop album hasn’t been forgotten at all, the hip-hop community still praises it. He just made himself so relatable it was very different for the time. His ability to rap about his life and struggle is flawless. He is an amazing artist and deserves more credit than he will ever get. In my opinion I feel like he should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame right next to rapper legend Run DMC, who is a classic hip hop legend. Kid Cudi himself is a legend he always has uncontrollable energy which comes through in his songs and his live shows.

The waist is 29 inches and the inseam is 43 inches meaning that the garment will fit a person with a waist measuring 29 inches and a length from navel to ankles of 43 cm. This pair is meant for males although females can also wear it thus rendering it unisex rather than being meant for parti cular group of sex. The objective is to provide surround sound through individual speaker channels and give a sense of realism to whatever is being watched or played. This speaker system is to be used with personal computer systems and also requires a sound card to be installed in the system. It can however also used to watch movies and play video games on a traditional TV wh ich has the necessary components to run the speaker system. The individual speakers are hooked into the woofer which also acts as the control unit. Care has to be taken that speakers are positioned properly around the room and are to be connected to the woofer relevant to their positions. Speakers are connected to the woofer using wires already fixed into each speaker. Therefore five wires go into the woofer according to speaker positions. Apart from this, a set of three color coded wires also goes into the woofer. Care has to be taken to insert the right colored wire into the right color coded slot. Only then will the speakers unction properly else there will be differences in sound quality and direction.Next, the wire is to be connected to the sound card that is installed in the PC.
